The Netherlands

Our Rotterdam office overlooks the River Maas. But this office is only a base. You will find us hard at work wherever we can achieve the biggest impact. As a consultant, as an investor or by initiating our own projects.

De Wijnhaven is the place where we have been working to achieve our Rebel dreams every day since 2002. The open atmosphere makes it a perfect base and meeting place for both Dutch Rebels and international Rebels.

Rebel Yann Pleindoux was interviewed for an Inframation publication by Rory Gallivan: ‘Airports battle for survival against the green lobby’.

Infrastructure fund owners of airports are facing their biggest ever challenge as the coronavirus outbreak results in a collapse in traffic. But when the crisis abates they will have to return to the longer-term issue of how to reduce carbon emissions. One major way to reduce aircraft emissions is by using biofuels instead of traditional fuels, and several airlines are making moves in this area. The Netherlands’ KLM, for example, last year committed to buy 75,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAFs) annually from 2022, from a plant to be developed by the sustainable aviation fuel specialist SkyNRG in Delfzijl in the northern part of the country.

For SAFs to become a major part of the mix for airlines though, they need to be produced at a scale that makes them economical because currently they are much more expensive than traditional fuel, notes Yann Pleindoux, a partner at the Dutch transportation and infrastructure consultancy Rebel.

Government support could be needed to kickstart the biofuel industry to enable it to achieve scale though, says Pleindoux. He notes that wind energy was initially subsidised by national governments until it reached a scale where it is now operating economically on a subsidy-free basis, something that could be emulated by the biofuel industry. Another way to make aviation greener is by making planes more efficient, and this is something on which the industry has made great strides.
