Tackling youth unemployment challenges in Kenya

Supporting the Office of the President in Kenya and UNICEF with the establishment of the Generation Unlimited initiative: a partnership aimed at coordinating various public and private efforts tackling youth unemployment.

The challenge

Youth unemployment is a major issue in Kenya: despite sizeable investments by the government and development partners there are still discrepancies between demand and supply. Rebel was asked to help design a new public-private partnership platform to coordinate youth unemployment interventions in the country.

The approach

Kenya recently joined Generation Unlimited, a global multi-sector partnership that meets the urgent need for expanded education, training and employment opportunities for young people. To help implement the program in Kenya, we mapped the current landscape of youth unemployment interventions and analyzed a range of public and private interventions with a potential for scaling-up.

We delivered a way-forward strategy for the Office of the President and UNICEF that will allow them to initiate the Generation Unlimited platform in Kenya.

Impact

Private-public stakeholders can now streamline employment creation interventions for one million unemployed young Kenyans.
