Junior consultant

For the Rebel South Africa office, we are looking for a junior development consultant passionate about economics, finance and development in Africa.

Who we are?

Rebel is an independent, employee-owned, advisory group operating internationally from its home base in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) and offices globally, including Antwerp (Belgium), Jakarta (Indonesia), Johannesburg (South Africa), Manila (Philippines), Nairobi (Kenya) and Washington D.C. (USA).

In 2002 we started Rebel because we wanted to make the world a little bit better. Today, about 200 Rebels are working from offices around the world on projects in socially relevant sectors including urban development, infrastructure, mobility and transport, culture, healthcare and energy. We provide financial and strategic advice to the public and private sectors including public policy design, economic analysis, financial strategy development, fund design, and transaction advisory. In the South African office we are particularly passionate about realising the potential of Africa’s dynamic people and economies.

  • You have a postgraduate degree (preferably Masters) in Economics, Finance, Social Science or similar development-related field;

  • You have excellent English communication and writing skills and an ability to communicate at all levels;
  • You have an ability to solve problems on the basis of conceptual thinking as well as through application of quantitative analysis;
  • You bring a strong drive combined with an interest in social and development issues;
  • You are a proactive self-starter who is able to be assertive;
  • You have an ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines;
  • You are interested in working at the public-private interface;
  • You are willing to travel;

What is this role about?

This is an entry-level position although we will happily consider applicants with some research and consulting experience. You will be positioned according to your level of experience and your skill set. This role is about exposure and learning. As part of a team you will undertake components of strategic consulting assignments for a variety of public and private sector clients. You will work under the guidance of a more senior consultant. Your role will include:

  • Helping to conceptualise projects and provide project management support;
  • Undertaking research both primary (interviews and surveys) as well as secondary (desktop research, literature reviews etc.);
  • Undertaking data collection, collation and analysis;
  • Developing proposals for new assignments;
  • Interacting with clients and other Rebels.

Key requirements

  • South African citizenship is a definite requirement;
  • Preference will be given to historically disadvantaged South Africans, especially women;
