Initiating a pilot project in Northern Italy
The Provinciale Ontwikkelingsmaatschappij West-Vlaanderen (provincial development company Western Flanders) wanted a pilot project to see if it could improve horizontal cooperation in transport logistics in the frozen vegetable and potato processing industry. It came to Rebel for advice. Given the hypercompetition in this market, achieving a form of horizontal cooperation would constitute a breakthrough on a European level.
Rebel developed a horizontal cooperation script
We wrote and implemented a generic but case specific script detailing horizontal cooperation in transport logistics. The theoretical framework was put to the test by three competitive companies working together through ‘community werking’, a cooperative tool supported by a logistics service provider.
The pilot project has now become normal working practice: the parties involved are cooperating on their export flow logistics for Northern Italy. This represents a shift from door-to-door road transport to an intermodal rail solution. The carbon footprint of the participating companies has been reduced by 46%.
Faith in co-optition
This experiment has been extremely important, not just for Rebel but for our client. It has been firmly embedded in the market and has confirmed Rebel’s belief in horizontal cooperation which, in time, will change from competition to co-optition.
